At 35 Years of Marriage — We Don’t Celebrate Valentine’s Day

But the reasons why might surprise you

In March, we’ll celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, and in 35 years, we’ve rarely celebrated Valentine’s Day. I don’t have a problem with those who do — hey, any excuse to celebrate those you love is a good thing. But Valentine’s Day hits wrong for me.

It is a commercially generated holiday designed to sell candy, flowers, jewelry, and dinners at expensive restaurants. I like all those things, but I would much rather give and receive those things on random days throughout the year.

Not too long ago, my husband brought home a bouquet of flowers. He wasn’t in the dog house, and there was no special occasion. He just saw the flowers, thought of me, and brought them home. Those are the gestures that make my heart smile. Doing the same thing on a day when advertisers, news channels, and social media remind you that you’re supposed to diminish the magic.

What Romance Looks Like in My Marriage

I’m fortunate to have been married to a good man for a long time, so I couldn’t possibly begin to list all the things he does that let me know he loves and appreciates me, but I can name some of the most recent.
