Does the Lord still speak to us in dreams? In the book of Joel, we are told;

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and daughters will shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” (Joel 2:28, KJV)

The Word tells us that, before Christ, dreams were a common way for the Lord to speak to His servants.

“And he said, Hear my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.” (Numbers 12:6, KJV)

The Lord still uses our dreams to speak truth into our lives. However, this is a topic that requires great discernment. Not every dream is a vision from God, and we risking chasing after the principalities of darkness when we start trying to seek the symbolism of every errant thought or dream that we have. We should take care when deciding if a vision or dream is from the Lord, as the enemy of our souls is a liar and an imitator.

Equally as troublesome is when we refuse to listen to God in our dreams. Often, God is using our dreams to speak with us because we have refused to spend quiet time in our days listening to his voice. If you have a dream that you think is from God, your first step should be to pray for understanding.

Only after you have prayed for wisdom and understanding should you attempt to interpret the dream. Let God give you the understanding He wants you to have. The second source of knowledge for dreams is the Word. God cannot separate Himself from the truth of His Word, so no vision from the Father will ever contradict the Word.

The Bible is full of stories of God speaking to people in their dreams. He spoke to Jacob.

“God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” “Here I am,” he replied.” (Genesis 46:2)

Most have heard the story of God calling Samuel.

“Suddenly, the Lord called out, “Samuel!” “Yes?” Samuel replied. “What is it?” He got up and ran to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?” (1 Samuel 3:4–14)
