I am white, straight and republican. We also adopted biracial kids. My son, who is biracial, came home from college yesterday and asked: “how do I fit into white privilege?” He was seriously questioning whether he had been raised in white privilege. It was a question they were discussing in class. The consensus of his classmates seemed to be that he did, in fact, have white privilege. However, their thinking wasn’t that it was because he was raised by white parents, but because he was biracial. I cannot love your story enough, especially when you say “But I question whether the problem is as dire as we’ve been led to believe.” Like you, I do not dare question that race is still an issue in our country, but my kids are not experiencing this dangerous racial divide that we keep being told is there.
